BodyTel Europe GmbH and its successor company, BodyTel GmbH, develop innovative products and services in the field of telemedicine. Smart As Apps has collaborated with BodyTel on various apps for both Android and iOS.
The focus here was on improving the Bluetooth Classic and Low Energy connectivity of medical devices. This was achieved by improving the architecture and overall software quality, as well as by connecting new devices. The medical devices included blood glucose and blood pressure monitors, body scales, spirometers, and activity trackers. Smart As Apps also helped with the development, connection, and approval of the Glucotel, BodyTel blood glucose monitor. The focus here was on checking the device communication, which was to be implemented by the device manufacturer in accordance with the specifications.
In addition to Bluetooth communication, a second area was the handling of server communication and the secure storage of measured values on the device. Since the app was a medical device, it had to be ensured that the measured values were stored with special protection and transmitted in a verifiable manner so that data loss between the device and the backend could be ruled out. An encrypted on-device database was used to store the data to be transferred, along with a corresponding communication protocol for data transfer.
The third area was the development of a diabetes diary for a customer of BodyTels. This diary was developed for iOS in Swift and focused on easy input and sophisticated visualization of the measured values.
Based on Steven’s experience in telemedicine from his time at the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center) and the EU project EmotionAAL, Smart As Apps also carried out several evaluations and prototypes. This took place in the areas of HL7 v2 and v3, IEEE 11073, and the Bluetooth Low Energy profile for the transmission of vital data, which was still being finalized at the time.
