DAK Health Insurance

Our managing director Steven Mohr – freelance developer behind Smart As Apps – supported DAK-Gesundheit from October 2022 to December 2024 as Senior Android Developer. DAK serves around 5.5 million insured persons and is one of the three largest statutory health insurance companies in Germany.

Mobile Health & Android Focus

  • Native Android development in Kotlin (MVVM + Databinding + Jetpack Compose)
  • Data security: End-to-end encryption of sensitive information and generation of cryptographic keys
  • Accessibility according to BITV: Compliance with German accessibility standards for health apps
  • CI/CD with Azure DevOps: Automated builds, test suites, and release pipelines

Architecture refactorings & code quality

Extensive refactoring – particularly of the navigation structure – increased the maintainability and expandability of the health app. In addition, he participated in internal OWASP Top 10 training courses to incorporate current security guidelines directly into the Android code base.

Proof-of-concepts & evaluations

  • Video consultation: three three-week POCs to evaluate telemedicine providers as part of an EU-wide tender process
  • ePA integration: bootstrapping for electronic patient records through to handover to a dedicated dev team
  • SAST comparison: two three-week proof-of-concept phases with various static application security testing providers

New native features

  • Bonus program: completely native implementation to incentivize healthy activities
  • Bank details: encrypted management of multiple accounts within the app
  • Pregnancy companion: personalized weekly guide covering all aspects of pregnancy and health

These measures modernized the DAK-Gesundheit Android app in terms of technology and functionality, with a focus on health app security, accessibility, Kotlin MVVM and mobile CI/CD. They form a scalable basis for future digital health services.
